چکیده

dimers from alpha-pinene are formed. This is an actual topic in atmospheric sciences as high-molecular weight products are likely involved in new particle formation under ambient conditions. Unambiguous evidence is provided that high-molecular weight diesters are formed through ozonolysis and not through OH-initiated oxidation of alphapinene, and involve the participation of a stabilized Criegee intermediate (sCI), thus revising a previous formation mechanism, proposed in Yasmeen et al. (2010), where the high-molecular weight diesters have been explained by esterification of monomeric terpenoic acids in the particle phase. A reasonable explanation is given why in field studies conducted at K-puszta, Hungary, or the Blodgett forest, USA, the high-molecular weight diesters are mainly detected during night-time when ozone chemistry may occur. Evidence is also provided that diaterpenylic acid acetate (DTAA) is formed through OH-initiated oxidation of alpha-pinene and does not serve as a monomer for the MW 358 dimer.

Dimers in α-pinene secondary organic aerosol: effect of hydroxyl radical, ozone, relative humidity and aerosol acidity

The formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) from both ozonolysis and hydroxyl radical (OH)-initiated oxidation of α-pinene under conditions of high nitric oxide (NO) concentrations with varying relative humidity (RH) and aerosol acidity was investigated in the University of North Carolina dual outdoor smog chamber facility. SOA formation from ozonolysis of α-pinene was enhanced relative to...

Formation and evolution of molecular products in α-pinene secondary organic aerosol.

Much of our understanding of atmospheric secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation from volatile organic compounds derives from laboratory chamber measurements, including mass yield and elemental composition. These measurements alone are insufficient to identify the chemical mechanisms of SOA production. We present here a comprehensive dataset on the molecular identity, abundance, and kinetics ...

Gas-Phase Ozone Oxidation of Monoterpenes: Gaseous and Particulate Products

Atmospheric oxidation of monoterpenes contributes to formation of tropospheric ozone and secondary organic aerosol, but their products are poorly characterized. In this work, we report a series of outdoor smog chamber experiments to investigate both gaseous and particulate products in the ozone oxidation of four monoterpenes: α-pinene, β-pinene, 13-carene, and sabinene. More than ten oxygenated...
